Overview

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can affect a child or young person’s ability to learn. They can affect their:

  • behaviour or ability to socialise, for example they struggle to make friends
  • reading and writing, for example because they have dyslexia
  • ability to understand things
  • concentration levels, for example because they have ADHD
  • physical activities

There are four broad types of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), as defined by the Department for Education:

  1. Communication and interaction
  2. Cognition and learning
  3. Social, mental and emotional health
  4. Sensory or physical

At St Marie’s, our aim is for every child to be included in the curriculum and in daily school life. Please speak to our SENCO if you feel your child has a special educational need or if you would like advice in any of the above areas of need.
